may just get it!

Jean Shining Tree

We never saw a vehicle on any road in Shining Tree
in 3 days. Only a snow plow and it was out doing
the major highways, leaving the town laden with snow.
If people left their homes it was by snowmobile. There was really no need for anyone
to try and dig their vehicle out. There was nowhere for them to go.Even the groomer
couldn't groom. There was too much snow.

Shining Tree Ontario, March 1st weekend 2002

Drove to Sudbury Thursday evening.
Friday left from Sportsman's Lodge north To Shining Tree. 157 KM.
Saturday took a trip up to Mattagami Lake and back to Shining Tree. Round trip 150 KM.
Saturday it started to snow. Calling for 50+ cm of snow - high winds - really cold temps.
Sunday stranded in Shining Tree. Have you ever heard of so much snow that you couldn't run a snowmachine ?

Three Bears didn't have any reservations for Sunday and by 6:00 that night 21 people where begging for a place to stay and wait out the storm. Sleds were running out of gas because they were breaking trail and running in serious snow conditions. Sleds where freezing up due to the severe temps and the powder snow was filling their engines.

Monday - braved the mountains of snow to return to Sudbury. Sledders were filling what they could with precious gasoline, knowing that breaking trail would soon eat up the gas needed to get to Sudbury and the next station..

21 people stranded at Three Bears all returning to Sudbury.
157 KM to the next gas station and more snow than any of us had ever seen or dreamed of in our lives.
Many first attempts on Sunday failed but Monday with 30 below temperatures in the morning, we headed out to break trail south to Sudbury.

In the surrounding area 21 other people were also stranded, and with the aid of the police by Monday at 3:00pm had all reached
safety.

An unforgettable trip that once back in the safety of Sudbury I wouldn't have missed for the world.

Many thanks to Joan and Cindy at Three Bears for feeding us and staying open late to accommodate all the stranded snowmobilers.

Shining Tree town
Those are house peeks you see
behind all that snow. There was
no apparent driveways into any of these homes. Unbelievable?
That's an understatement.

Anyone for a little
